Playing in the semis of the boys’ tennis Team State Tournament for the first time in school history, Owensboro Catholic had an opportunity to advance to the finals, but instead dropped a heartbreaker to Paul Laurence Dunbar 2-3. The doubles teams of Houston Danzer and Ben Haines and John Wathen and Henry Haines both won, while on the singles side, Jack Haines and Ollie Haines both pushed their opponents to third set tiebreakers.
Despite the loss, the Aces are a young team that will only improve from the deep playoff run.
“The boys had an incredible season and gave it all they had today,” Owensboro Catholic head coach Noel Clayton said. “Give Lexington Dunbar all the credit, as they were just a little bit better than us. They just put their best three players at singles, and we gave them all we could by taking two of them to third-set tiebreakers. Our kids are remarkable competitors playing in one of the hardest sports and then carrying the additional pressure of the team competition. I could not be prouder of our team and coaches.”
