The Senior Community Center of Owensboro-Daviess County has received a $9,600 grant from the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels to help purchase vehicles for its Meals on Wheels program.
The grant is part of $2.5 million in funding awarded this year by the Kentucky Colonels to 333 nonprofits across the state, impacting more than 4 million Kentuckians.
Executive Director David Tucker said the funding marks a significant step forward for the program.
“We are thankful for this award and will add it to funds that have been provided through other grants for this project,” Tucker said. “These funds will allow us to start a fleet of vehicles for our Meals on Wheels delivery drivers to use in place of their personal vehicles. This is a huge step forward for us, and we are very thankful.”
The Senior Community Center provides services for Daviess County residents age 60 and over, including the Meals on Wheels deliveries.
Kentucky Colonels Commanding General Gary Boschert said requests totaled $5 million this year, but the organization was able to distribute half that amount through its Good Works Program, supported by donations from Colonels across Kentucky and around the world.
“Together we helped support more than 4 million people this year,” Boschert said.
The Senior Community Center continues to welcome donations for its programs and new facility. Contributions can be made in person or by mail at 1650 West Second Street or online at www.seniorcenterodc.com.
Since 1951, the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels has awarded more than $72 million in grants to more than 1,700 nonprofits. To learn more, visit kycolonels.org.
