The Owensboro Museum of Fine Art’s weeklong summer camp, “Museum Masterpieces,” will offer a creative journey into the museum’s Permanent Collections, with young artists invited to craft their own works inspired by notable pieces on display.

The camp will run from July 28 to August 1 and is open to children ages 6 to 15, with sessions held daily from 9-11 a.m. and again from 1-3 p.m. All classes are free and taught by professional artists and educators.

Each day focuses on a different theme:

  • July 28 – Little Mo Monday: Inspired by Peter Reginato’s Little Mo, children will create their own colorful mini-sculptures using a variety of materials.
  • July 29 – Motion in Color: Campers will interact with Kaleidoscope Kave by Ed Tannenbaum, then use digital cameras, paint, and canvas to create artwork combining motion and rhythm.
  • July 30 – Textile Treasures: Young artists will explore fiber arts with felt and fabric, designing their own tapestries influenced by Kentucky textile artist Alma Lesch.
  • July 31 – Weightless Wonders: Participants will design mobile collages that float in air, using materials like tissue paper, cardboard, and wood, in the style of Joe Downing.
  • Aug. 1 – Powerful Palettes: Campers will study the bold lines and colors of John Nieto’s work, then produce expressive paintings inspired by his portrayals of Native American culture.

OMFA’s seasonal art camps are the only free art education programs in the region taught by professional instructors.

Reservations are required and can be made by calling 270-685-3181 or emailing [email protected].
