Drivers on the U.S. 60 bypass should prepare for lane closures and possible detours starting next week and lasting approximately 2 months, as long-awaited repairs begin on the Carter Road bridge.
The bridge — located where Carter Road (KY 2698) crosses the bypass (U.S. 60/Wendell Ford Expressway) — was damaged more than a year ago when it was struck by a commercial vehicle. Since then, temporary shoulder restrictions have been in place.
Kentucky Transportation Cabinet officials said permanent repairs required a specially fabricated support beam, delaying construction until now.
Construction is set to begin Monday. Repairs are expected to be completed by mid-September.
During the project:
- Westbound U.S. 60 will be reduced to one lane from mile marker 13 to 12.3.
- Northbound Carter Road will also see additional lane restrictions.
- When necessary, both directions of U.S. 60 may be temporarily closed between mile markers 12.3-13, with traffic detoured via Carter Road’s off- and on-ramps. Flaggers will direct traffic through the intersections to keep vehicles moving.
