Drivers on the U.S. 60 bypass (Wendell Ford Expressway) should expect a full closure Wednesday near the Carter Road overpass as crews begin repairing the bridge beam damaged more than a year ago.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet said both directions of the bypass will be blocked at Carter Road starting around 8 a.m. July 23. The closure is necessary to protect motorists from falling debris while the damaged beam is replaced, officials said.
Traffic will be detoured using the Carter Road exit ramps. Flaggers will direct drivers through the intersection, where they can re-enter the bypass via the on-ramp on the opposite side of the bridge.
The detour is expected to remain in place most of the day. Officials said an additional closure may be required on Thursday, depending on progress.
The work stems from a June 2024 incident in which a commercial vehicle struck the Carter Road bridge. Inspectors determined the bridge could safely remain open with restrictions in place while a replacement beam was designed and fabricated.
