Kentucky Wesleyan College students, faculty, and staff came together with community members Monday morning to build beds for children in need as part of the school’s annual build-a-bed project.
The effort, sponsored by Campus Ministries, marked the eighth year for the program and pushed the college past 250 beds built since 2016.
Volunteers worked in teams across seven stations to assemble hand-crafted beds, which will be delivered to families throughout the week. Each bed comes with a mattress, bedding, pillows, a children’s Bible, and hygiene items.
“Many children in our own community go to bed each night without a bed of their own,” said Anna Crasher, KWC’s director of spiritual life. “Every child deserves a safe, comfortable place to sleep, and we invite our campus community and friends to come together to make a lasting difference in the lives of local kids.”
Crasher said the project grew out of a student’s idea in 2016, with KWC partnering with Trinity United Methodist Church to expand the initiative. Today, the college works with local school family resource centers to identify children who will receive the beds.
“The response from students and the community has been phenomenal,” Crasher said. “Together, we can ensure that no child sleeps on the floor.”
