The Daviess County Sheriff’s Office has completed its annual back-to-school traffic enforcement detail designed to promote safe driving in school zones as students return for the start of a new year.
“This was our third year doing this detail, and it does seem like the additional presence in the school zones and media attention about this detail is helping to get the word out and slow people down, which is what we want to happen,” Daviess County Sheriff Brad Youngman said. “Most of the motorists we stopped understood why we were out there and what we were hoping to accomplish.”
This year’s detail ran from August 12-22, during which DCSO deputies conducted 58 traffic stops in 21 school zones, resulting in 47 warnings and 11 citations. Youngman said the results are a decrease from 2024 and 2023.
Youngman said DCSO patrol units will remain active in school zones throughout the school year, but without the additional units the detail provided. DCSO will plan additional traffic enforcement operations as needed, such as when school returns from Christmas Break or when school administrators report problems within their school zones.
“We are noticing that people are becoming more aware of active school zones since we have been doing this detail and placing more attention on safety,” said Patrol Division Corporal Nick Hines, the officer in charge of the detail. “They’re being more aware of their surroundings, noticing the flashing yellow lights and signs, slowing down and putting their phones away, and we appreciate it.”
