State Sen. Gary Boswell said Friday he will seek another term representing the 8th District, which covers Daviess, Hancock, and McLean counties.

“It has been the honor of a lifetime to represent the people of the 8th District in the Kentucky State Senate,” Boswell said in a prepared statement. “Today, I am ending any speculation and announcing that I will be seeking re-election.”

Boswell, who took office in January 2023, said recent events — including the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk — strengthened his resolve to continue serving.

“In this critical moment, I feel called to continue serving and to remain a voice for our shared principles,” Boswell said. “That is why I am seeking re-election to the 8th District Senate seat, and I am running to win.”

He said his campaign priorities include “protecting our children, lowering taxes, reducing burdensome regulations and bureaucracy, strengthening education, and cutting wasteful spending.” He also pointed to his work on the Appropriations and Revenue Committee and as vice chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee as key positions that allow him to secure funding for infrastructure and support local farmers.

Boswell emphasized his role in making sure the district receives resources for roads, highways, and bridges, adding that agriculture remains central to the region’s economy.

The senator noted that his first run for office was unusual. When he filed in 2022, no one else entered the race, making him one of the few candidates in state history to be elected unopposed to a Senate seat.

“I received the highest number of votes in the district for all candidates that cycle,” Boswell said. “Even though I was unopposed, it was still a clear sign of support.”

This time, Boswell expects competition but said no one has formally entered the race.

“I think people were waiting on me to make my decision,” Boswell said. “That’s why I felt it was important to go ahead and get this out now. Everywhere I go, people ask me if I’m going to run again. Now they have the answer.”

Boswell’s current term ends December 31, 2026. If re-elected, he would begin a new four-year term on January 1, 2027.
