Hancock County’s comeback attempt fell just short Friday night as the Hornets dropped a 21-14 road decision to Union County.
The Hornets (4-2) struck first after Cooper Jones picked off a pass to set up an early touchdown, but the Braves (3-3) answered to make it 7-7 at halftime.
Union’s physicality took over in the third quarter. Running back Rishard Green powered into the end zone, and the Braves added another score later in the frame to build a 21-7 advantage.
Hancock responded when quarterback Brady Eubanks found Christian Yanez for an 8-yard touchdown pass, cutting the deficit to 21-14. The Hornets’ onside kick attempt in the final minutes failed, sealing the Braves’ win.
Head coach Bobby Eubanks said missed opportunities proved costly.
“Union County is a tough physical team. We knew that going in,” Eubanks said. “We had to match that physicality and we weren’t able to do it in the second half. We lacked execution on key downs. We didn’t convert inside the red zone twice in the first half.
Eubanks finished 8-of-19 passing for 98 yards with one touchdown and one interception. He contributed 52 yards to the ground game while Kyle Anderson amassed amassed 62 yards.
Hunter Greathouse led the receivers with three catches for 40 yard while Jones had three grabs for 35 yards. Yanez finished with an 8-yard touchdown reception.
The Hornets will look to rebound in a key district matchup next week when they travel to Steele Stadium to face Owensboro Catholic.
