McLean County drivers can expect smoother travel ahead. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has allocated nearly $667,000 to improve rural roadways through the state’s Rural Secondary Program, with the majority of the funds being dedicated to resurfacing a portion of KY 254.
The RS Program provides funding to improve state-maintained secondary roads that are vital to rural communities, often serving as farm-to-market routes and connections between smaller towns and larger urban areas. The program is funded through Kentucky’s gas tax.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet recently made the presentation of funds to the McLean County Fiscal Court.
A release says that of the total allocation, 60% — or $410,423 — will fund one major state project recommended by KYTC and approved by the Fiscal Court: resurfacing KY 254 from KY 81 to KY 1155, a 2.3-mile stretch of roadway.
The remaining 40%, or $256,407, are designated as “Flex Funds.” County leaders unanimously voted to retain those funds for repairs on county-maintained roads rather than returning them to the state for additional state road projects, according to KYTC.
