Owensboro Community & Technical College is expanding its Automotive Technology program this semester with new hybrid/EV and diagnostics courses, and faculty say the additions will further support the program’s strong track record of helping students secure jobs with local employers.
“It’s a great opportunity to offer advanced courses in emerging technologies,” said Program Coordinator Billie Harris, who oversees both the Automotive and Diesel programs and led their ASE/NATEF reaccreditation. “While these aren’t entry-level courses, they are perfect for students looking to upskill. We have multiple models of these new technologies on hand for students to gain hands-on experience.”
All paired lab and classroom courses now offer hybrid formats for the lecture portions, creating more flexibility for students balancing work and family commitments.
Courses with available seating include:
- AUT 130/131 Manual Drive Train and Axles
- AUT 180/181 Automatic Transmission/Transaxle
- AUT 240/241 Computer Control Systems Diagnosis
- AUT 275/276 Hybrid & Electric Vehicle Technology
Only the hybrid/EV course requires prerequisites such as basic electricity, electrical systems, and engine repair. The offerings are geared toward second-year students or working technicians seeking to advance their skills.
While not a formal work-and-learn model, the program maintains strong partnerships with employers such as Don Moore and VASS CDJR, and faculty frequently assist students with job introductions and placement.
New faculty member Jeremy Kirtley brings more than 30 years of automotive and heavy equipment experience. He is ASE certified and a graduate of the Nashville Auto-Diesel College, with prior roles at Don Moore Automotive and Alcoa/Kaiser Aluminum.
