Two people were arrested Tuesday after detectives with the Daviess County Sheriff’s Office observed what they described as a suspected drug transaction during a motel surveillance operation, according to a media release.
The Sheriff’s Office Special Investigations Unit was conducting surveillance on December 9 near a motel in the 1300 block of West Second Street after receiving community complaints alleging illegal activity, the release said. Detectives reported seeing a man leave his room and meet a woman in the parking lot. According to the release, investigators watched as the man reached into a gray plastic bag, removed a small baggie, and handed it to the woman, who then gave him money.
Detectives approached the pair to investigate. The woman reportedly told detectives she believed she had an active arrest warrant and admitted she had just purchased synthetic marijuana and hidden it in her bra, according to the release. Deputies said they later learned she was mistaken and had no active warrant, but she was arrested after removing the synthetic marijuana.
While speaking with both individuals, detectives said they also noticed another small baggie of suspected synthetic marijuana hanging from the man’s pants pocket. He was taken into custody, and detectives found the gray plastic bag contained several baggies of suspected synthetic marijuana, baggies of methamphetamine, and drug paraphernalia, the Sheriff’s Office said. According to the release, the man told detectives he was selling small bags of drugs “to make some money.”
Both were booked into the Daviess County Detention Center, and all seized items were logged into evidence, according to the release.
The Sheriff’s Office identified the suspects as:
• Jonathan R. Sapp, 48, of the 1300 block of West Second Street.
Charges: Trafficking in a Controlled Substance 1st Degree (Meth), Trafficking in Synthetic Drugs, and Drug Paraphernalia – Buy/Possess.
• Ashley L. Moorman, 41, of the 1300 block of West Second Street.
Charge: Possession of Synthetic Drugs – Second or Subsequent Offense.
