The Owensboro Bridge is still scheduled to reopen on January 16, according to an update on Friday afternoon from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.

Though officially named the Owensboro Bridge, the structure is commonly referred to as the Glover Cary Bridge or the Blue Bridge.

A KYTC official said the contractor remains on track to complete enough work by mid-January to safely reopen the span, even as some construction continues. The reopening date was first announced in October after delays in steel fabrication and material availability pushed the timeline back.

The bridge has been closed since mid-July as crews work to replace a 750-foot section of concrete-filled steel decking and make additional repairs, including to the Indiana approach. Because the decking spans the full width, officials said a full closure was necessary during the project.

The nearly $18 million effort is intended as a long-term investment in the 1940-era bridge, which carries about 7,200 vehicles daily.

Traffic remains detoured to the U.S. 231 William H. Natcher Bridge while work continues.
