Whitesville Community Credit Union is expanding into Owensboro through a merger with Modern Employees Federal Credit Union, bringing new services, upgraded technology, and a planned renovation to the Owensboro location.
Discussions began in mid-2025 after the CEO of Modern Employees Federal Credit Union stepped down with no replacement in place. Whitesville Community Credit Union quickly moved to facilitate the merger. The legal process was completed on Dec. 31, 2025, and the operational transition is expected by the end of March 2026.
“This happened very quickly,” said Kim Greer, President and CEO of Whitesville Community Credit Union. “Mergers typically take 12 to 18 months. We’re completing this one in about seven.”
Once complete, the Owensboro office will officially become a branch of Whitesville Community Credit Union. That means new services and conveniences for Whitesville residents who work in Owensboro, and expanded offerings for Modern’s existing members.
“This is a big step for Whitesville,” Greer said. “A lot of our members work in Owensboro. Now they’ll be able to take care of their banking while they’re in town for work.”
Greer said the existing Owensboro location will also be fully renovated to better reflect the services and professional atmosphere of the expanding credit union.
“The building is outdated. We plan to completely remodel it to create a modern, welcoming space,” Greer said.
For members of Modern Employees Federal Credit Union, the merger brings a wide range of services that were not previously available, including mobile banking, online bill pay, e-statements, and improved loan and credit products. The credit union’s employees will also benefit, with access to health insurance, a 401(k) with a 6% match, and opportunities for advancement.
“Our goal is to grow and offer more to our members,” Greer said. “Modern’s members will gain access to better technology, more services, and stronger support.”
The merger was approved by a membership vote, with 84 in favor and four opposed. Because both institutions are not-for-profit cooperatives, no money changed hands. Instead, the two credit unions combined memberships and operations.
“You can’t buy a credit union,” Greer said. “This wasn’t a business deal. It was about combining resources to better serve the members.”
Whitesville Community Credit Union was founded in 1962 as St. Mary’s Credit Union. Since then, it has grown and evolved drastically. Over the past decade, Greer said they’ve jumped from $15 million to nearly $40 million in assets, now serving the entire GRADD region and potentially expanding further into the BRADD area.
She said one of its signature services is mobile home lending, which is rare among regional banks and credit unions.
“Even local banks call us about mobile home loans,” Greer said. “It’s something we’re known for, along with great car loan rates and strong customer service.”
The existing staff will stay on, with one new part-time teller likely being added as loan services expand.
Greer said the Whitesville community has been excited about the announcement, with members calling as early as Jan. 2 to ask when they could begin using the Owensboro location.
“People are proud to see the Whitesville name on a building in Owensboro,” she said. “It means we’re not just holding steady, we’re moving forward. And we’re doing it in a way that strengthens both communities.”
