Owensboro picked up at least another inch of snow through Thursday night and into Friday morning, adding to previous accumulations and creating slick conditions for morning commuters across the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, light to moderate snow moved through the Evansville Tri-State area overnight, with totals ranging from a dusting up to a half inch during the day Thursday before the latest round added more. Officials warned of reduced visibility and slippery spots on untreated roads, bridges, and sidewalks.
A Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect through noon Saturday for the entire region. The report said wind chills are expected to drop as low as -10 degrees overnight and into the early morning hours Friday and Saturday. The coldest values are forecast before sunrise on Friday in many areas of western Kentucky and southern Illinois.
The National Weather Service urged residents to use caution when relying on alternative heat sources, such as space heaters or wood stoves, and to dress appropriately for extreme cold with insulated layers, gloves, boots, and a face covering.
Forecasters are also monitoring a potential wintry mix next week. A disturbance may move through the area Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday, with snow, sleet, freezing rain, or plain rain all possible depending on temperatures. Minor accumulations of snow or ice could occur, but it remains too early to determine travel impacts.
Officials encouraged residents to stay up to date with the latest forecasts heading into next week.
