A three-vehicle crash involving a Daviess County Sheriff’s Office patrol cruiser occurred Monday afternoon when a semi-truck failed to stop for slowed traffic as a deputy cleared debris from I-165, according to DCSO.
Authorities said the collision happened at approximately 2:54 p.m. Monday after a DCSO deputy responded to a report of debris in the roadway and exited his patrol vehicle to remove it. The cruiser’s emergency equipment, including its lightbar, was activated at the time, according to a DCSO release.
DCSO said that a northbound Toyota Tacoma pickup truck was behind the patrol cruiser and was slowing to a stop when a northbound Kenworth semi-truck and trailer failed to stop, striking both the Toyota and the DCSO patrol car.
According to Sheriff Brad Youngman, and as shown by dash cam footage from another semi not involved in the accident, the deputy realized there was going to be a collision and was able to run far enough away to avoid being hit.
All three vehicles sustained severe damage, though no injuries were reported, according to DCSO.
AMR Ambulance Service responded to the scene. The Kentucky State Police is investigating the collision at the request of DCSO due to the involvement of a sheriff’s office patrol vehicle.
Both northbound lanes of I-165 were closed for approximately two hours while law enforcement worked the crash and wreckers cleared the scene.
