A convicted felon has been arrested after firing a shotgun in a neighborhood on Wednesday night, according to the Daviess County Sheriff’s Office.
According to DCSO, patrol deputies responded at approximately 8:24 p.m. Wednesday to a report of a burglary in progress in the 3500 block of Cannonade Loop North in the Thoroughbred Acres subdivision. A neighbor reported seeing a man outside a home with what she believed was a rifle (later confirmed to be a shotgun), and the neighbor said she heard a gunshot and yelling.
Upon arrival, deputies located Ira B. Dyer III, 48, of the 3500 block of Cannonade Loop North. According to DCSO, Dyer claimed that five suspects had broken into his home and fled on foot. Dyer reportedly told deputies he fired a shotgun at the suspects, striking one of them.
As deputies searched the area and investigated the alleged burglary, they found no evidence that a break-in had occurred, authorities said. Several nearby witnesses confirmed hearing a gunshot, but deputies found no injuries or property damage, according to DCSO. Investigators noted that Dyer repeatedly retold the story with varying details and showed signs of a possible mental health episode.
During the investigation, deputies confirmed Dyer was a convicted felon and prohibited by law from possessing a firearm, DCSO said. He was taken into custody and transported to the Daviess County Detention Center on charges of first-degree wanton endangerment (discharge of a firearm) and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. A crisis intervention report was also completed.
According to DCSO, Dyer’s previous felony charges include manslaughter, manufacturing methamphetamine, persistent felony offender, fleeing police, and multiple theft and drug offenses.
