A multi-sport athlete, Carolina Jones has had little time to gear up for the indoor track season due to her commitment on the basketball court. Despite only a few days of practice throughout the indoor track season, Jones shattered her own expectations.
Competing at the KHSAA Class 1A State Indoor Track & Field Championships, she won the girls’ high jump (4-10.00) and finished fourth in the girls’ 55-meter hurdles (9.26) – setting school records in both.
“Winning was very unexpected, especially with little practice, and how the rankings were,” Jones said. “I always love to win, so I can’t complain.”
Jones wasn’t the only Hancock County athlete to land on the podium, as Emmitt Meserve was fifth in the 3200, and Camdyn Harper and Cooper Jones were seventh in the shot put and 400. The 4×800 relay team of Meserve, Noah Henson, Ethan Heavrin, and Wyatt Huff was also seventh and beat their season best time by 21 seconds.
Ellen Meserve broke the school record in the shot put. Overall, the Lady Hornets finished 10th, and the Hornets were 18th.
Owensboro Catholic was also in attendance, with the boys’ team finishing third and the girls’ team fifth. Peyton Reid and Houston Lynn led the way in the individual events, finishing second in the girls’ 1600 and the boys’ high jump, while the Lady Aces 4×800 relay team of Ashlie Hayden, Ainsley Sutter, Caroline Wathen, and Reid also finished second.
Reid also finished fourth in the girls’ 800, Russ Boarman and Drew Miles were fifth and seventh in the boys 55 meter dash, and Owen Brey was 5th in the boys 1600 and sixth in the 800. Luke Whitledge and Ainsley Sutter were fourth in the 200 meter dash and 3200, and Cam Woodward finished fourth in the boys’ triple jump.
The boys’ 4×200 and 4×400 relays placed third and seventh, while the girls’ 4×400 and 4×200 relays finished fourth and eighth, respectively.
