The Senior Community Center of Owensboro-Daviess County officially broke ground Wednesday on its new campus, marking a major milestone in plans to expand services for local residents age 60 and older.

The ceremony took place at the corner of Carter Road and West Second Street, on an 8-acre property just west of the Western Kentucky Botanical Garden.

“This is an exciting and historic moment that our seniors have looked forward to for many years,” said SCC executive director David Tucker.

Plans for the new center were unveiled earlier this spring — read more here — and the facility is designed to better serve the region’s growing senior population.

Amenities will include an expanded all-purpose room for congregate meals, dances and special events; dedicated classroom space; two exercise rooms — one outfitted with senior-friendly fitness equipment and another with open space for floor and chair exercises; a comfortable reception and lounge area; outdoor seating; interior and exterior walking trails; and more.

An artistic rendering by Katie Shively Lowing and the architect’s floor plans were on display during the event. Following the ceremony, attendees gathered in an on-site tent for a reception with refreshments.

“This new facility is truly a dream come true,” Tucker said. “We appreciate the efforts and dedication of so many people who have worked over the years to make this dream a reality. Our new Senior Community Center is designed with today’s active senior in mind, and will allow us to offer even more services, programs, and resources.”

The Center remains in the midst of a fundraising campaign to outfit the new building with furnishings and amenities. Daviess Fiscal Court is matching all donations, effectively doubling every contribution. Donations can be mailed to the Senior Community Center, 1650 W. Second St., Owensboro, KY 42303, or made securely online at www.seniorcenterodc.com by clicking the “Donate” button.
