The Owensboro Regional Farmers’ Market is heating up this summer with “Taste of the Market” — four Thursday nights of local chefs, fresh seasonal ingredients, and free samples from 4-7 p.m.

Taking place every other Thursday evening in June and July at the market (1205 Triplett Street), the event highlights local chefs showcasing dishes made from Kentucky Proud meats, produce, breads, and other seasonal products sourced from market vendors.

“It’s really about celebrating what our local chefs can do with in-season produce and local meats,” said Mary Beth Alexander, market manager. “These are fresh, local vendors and chefs coming together to create something delicious — and to show people how accessible it is to cook this way at home.”

The series kicks off June 5 with Chef Nick Payne of Callas followed by Chef Will Preston of East Coast Eats on June 19. Chef Dennis Weafer of Fetta Specialty Pizza will be there on July 10, and the series concludes on July 24 with Chef Ethan Vanover, executive chef at Morrison Foods with Owensboro Health.

Each chef receives $250 to shop the market for ingredients in the days before their event, typically at Tuesday or Saturday markets. What they prepare remains a surprise until the evening of the event.

“We don’t know what dishes they’ll make until they come in and shop,” Alexander said. “It depends on what’s fresh and available that week. They find inspiration from what’s there, and the results have been incredible.”

Alongside chef demonstrations and tastings, visitors can shop from a variety of local farmers, bakers, and artisans, enjoying an evening atmosphere enhanced by live music. This year’s events will also feature a “Paint and Taste” night hosted by local artist Tabatha Cooper, with wine samples from a local vendor.

The Thursday evening market offers a fresh alternative for those who can’t attend the traditional Saturday or Tuesday morning markets.

“It’s an evening event — it has a different vibe,” Alexander said. “Customers have told us they want more chances to come after work. It’s a whole evening experience: shop, eat, relax, and enjoy music.”

Now in its third season, the event has grown in popularity and awareness.

“It’s taken some time to get the word out, but people now look forward to it,” Alexander said. “It’s become a signature summer event.”
