An inclusive talent showcase highlighting the creativity of individuals with disabilities is returning to Owensboro this month. The Opportunity Center of Owensboro will host its second annual We’ve Got Talent, Too! event on June 18, offering a free community celebration of music, dance, visual arts, and more.
The showcase runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Opportunity Center Bingo Hall, 1101 East Byers Avenue.
Performers from eight local agencies will take the stage to share their talents, supported by a crowd known for its laughter, cheers, and genuine encouragement.
Amanda Alexander, program manager at the Opportunity Center and the event’s founder, said the inspiration came from recognizing that individuals with disabilities are often overlooked when it comes to traditional talent showcases.
“This was basically an event to spotlight talents that people don’t often get to see,” Alexander said. “They love to get on stage and shine — this is their time.”
In addition to performances, this year’s event will feature a new visual arts gallery. The exhibit will feature paintings, sculptures, crochet work, and other pieces created by clients from participating organizations, providing a platform for those who prefer to express themselves offstage.
Ashlee Berry, the Center’s community engagement director, said the event has grown significantly from its debut last year.
“We’ve expanded the stage, added lighting and pipe-and-drape elements for a more polished look, and integrated support from our Partners in Possibilities campaign to help sponsor the event,” Berry said.
Berry said last year’s trial run was largely internal, but this year’s showcase is open to the public, and organizers are hoping for a strong turnout from community members who appreciate and support inclusive programming.
“There’s some real talent in this, and I think it’ll be a great show,” Berry said.
While the event is free, attendees are welcome to grab lunch from local food truck East Coast Eats, which will be on-site throughout the day. A panel of guest judges from the community will also be present to help highlight each participant’s unique contribution.
Alexander said what makes the event truly special is the spirit of togetherness.
“There’s not one agency that just cheers for their own,” she said. “It’s a lot of laughing, crying, and lots of love in the room. Everybody supports everybody.”
