Kahawa Java, a coffee shop co-owned by mother-daughter duo Ticy and Ayanna Cox, is relocating from its original location on West Parrish Avenue to a new space downtown — just steps away from Owensboro’s upcoming downtown sports complex.

The shop will close its current location on July 26 and plans to reopen in early August at 318 St. Elizabeth Street. The move coincides with the café’s third anniversary and signals a new chapter in the owners’ mission to bring Owensboro its first true coffeehouse experience.

“Owensboro hasn’t really had a true coffee house — until now,” she said. “We’re so excited to create that kind of space here.”

Since opening in August 2022, Kahawa Java — “kahawa” means coffee in Swahili — has focused on creating a welcoming space for people to slow down, enjoy a quality drink, and connect without distractions.

“It’s always been about good coffee and good conversation,” Ticy said. “Now we finally have the space to bring that full vision to life.”

The new location — a historic house built in 1885 — will feature cozy seating nooks, accent chairs, shared tables, and a dedicated co-working desk. An outdoor patio is also planned, complete with flower boxes, lighting, and additional seating. Guests can park in the back or along the street, with foot traffic expected to increase thanks to nearby businesses and events.

“This house has so much character,” Ticy said. “It’s going to feel warm and welcoming — a place where people will want to sit down, open a laptop, or just have a real conversation.”

The shop will continue serving Frothy Monkey coffee from Nashville, alongside teas, matchas, pastries from local bakers, and soon, savory offerings for those who want to settle in and stay awhile.

Originally located in a small strip center, Kahawa Java quickly outgrew its space as the Coxes dreamed of hosting more community events — from spoken word nights to live music.

In the weeks leading up to the move, the Coxes have been sharing behind-the-scenes updates and design choices with their followers, creating excitement and curiosity about what’s next.

“People have really been along for the ride,” Ayanna said. “They’re excited to see where we’re going, and we’re just as excited to welcome them in.”

The exact grand opening date will be announced on the shop’s Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok.
