After 17 years of ownership, Debbie Abney is closing the doors to Merle Norman Cosmetics in Owensboro.
The studio, located in Williamsburg Square on Veach Road, will officially close on August 1. The decision comes after Abney was unable to find a buyer to continue the store’s 75-year legacy in the community.
“This decision wasn’t easy, but rather than focus on the end, I want to take the next few months to celebrate the amazing customers, friends, and community that have made this journey so special,” Abney said. “You have been the heart of this business, and I am beyond grateful for the support, trust, and loyalty over the years.”
Abney’s connection to the business goes back decades. Her mother previously owned the studio, and Abney spent much of her childhood helping out at the store. She eventually purchased the franchise herself in 2008, continuing what she called a family legacy.
“This has been one of the most fulfilling and rewarding experiences of my life,” she said. “Closing up is bittersweet. I’m excited to start a new chapter in my life but sad to be losing all the wonderful customers I have had over the years.”
The studio has changed locations multiple times, from its original site downtown to Emory Drive, Towne Square Mall, and finally Williamsburg Square. Abney said she plans to continue working in the beauty industry by providing nail services at a new location.
Between now and the closing date, Merle Norman will continue offering its full lineup of products and services.
“I hope you’ll stop by, share a memory, and let me thank you in person,” Abney said. “I look forward to making the most of these last few weeks together.”
