DCPS announces teacher, staff awards during opening day

Daviess County Public Schools on Monday announced recipients of the district’s three Teachers of the Year as well as the Customer Service and Support Professional staff members of the year. The awards recognize “outstanding staff members who exemplify the highest ideals of the DCPS mission.”

According to a release, the Teacher of the Year Awards showcase teachers who exemplify and embody the characteristics of great teachers in the district.

“These characteristics include a passion for teaching and learning, a student-centered approach to all they do, an ability to develop and maintain positive relationships, a commitment to a growth mindset, and a dedicated team player attitude,” a release from DCPS says.

This year’s award recipients are: 

2025 Elementary School Teacher of the Year 
Jacki Varble – East View Elementary School 

2025 Middle School Teacher of the Year 
Ashley Collins – Daviess County Middle School 

2025 High School Teacher of the Year 
Amber Preston – Heritage Park High School 

According to DCPS, the Support Professional and Customer Service awards honor individuals “who showcase kindness, dependability, and an exemplary way of making families and students feel welcome, challenging students to do their best.”

This year’s award recipients are: 

2025 Support Professional Award 
Samantha Threlkeld – West Louisville Elementary School 

2025 Customer Service Award 
AHS Lunch Room Staff – Apollo High School 

Through a partnership with Independence Bank, each award recipient received a $1,000 check to use for their classroom needs throughout the school year. 

“We’ve always believed you can start something great by doing something good,” said Independence Bank President Nick Oller. “The beginning of a new school year is full of hope, hard work, and heart. We’re proud to help recognize this year’s honorees, while bringing positivity into the schools and celebrating those who choose to lead with care, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to education.”
