Doug Martin, the owner of Martin Family Farm, has been growing fresh produce for more than two decades.
Based in Owensboro, Martin’s farm offers a variety of locally grown items including squash, zucchini, tomatoes, jalapenos, onions, potatoes, and green beans. While Martin is the sole worker on the farm, he also sells produce from a fellow farmer in Masonville, sharing the profits with him.
“I’ve been doing this since about 2002,” Martin said. “I really enjoy raising the crops and working with the land.”
Though Martin primarily raises cows for the farm’s income, another passion lies in growing vegetables and tending to his garden. He has been bringing his harvest to the Owensboro Regional Farmers’ Market since its early days, where he enjoys connecting with the community.
The market, which has grown over the years, continues to be a special place for Martin. He values the connections he’s made with both fellow farmers and customers.
“The biggest thing is the farmers,” Martin said. “It’s about the people and the quality of the produce.”
For Martin, the market offers a sense of pride, not just in selling his products, but in providing a service to local shoppers. He also appreciates the benefits the market provides for older customers who can easily park during the week when the lot is less crowded, making it easier for them to shop.
Despite the market’s fluctuating crowds, Martin remains committed to his work and finds joy in serving customers.
“We love coming and love serving customers,” Martin said.
Martin’s dedication to his farm and his community is evident in the pride he takes in his work, and he looks forward to continuing to contribute to the local produce scene for years to come.
