Halloween Havoc is marking its 20th anniversary this year, and owner Joni Autry said the milestone is both humbling and a testament to the community support that’s kept the locally owned shop thriving for two decades.

The store, located at 1212 J.R. Miller Boulevard in the former Family Video location, is already open for the season, but a special celebration is planned for the first week of October. Current hours are Monday-Saturday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. As Halloween draws nearer, Friday and Saturday hours will be extended to 9 p.m.

Autry said Halloween Havoc has become known for carrying unique items that chain stores don’t offer. From screen masks and corsets to makeup and specialty pieces, the shop caters to both traditional costume buyers and those who want to create their own look. She said the store’s flexibility is key, because customers often request specific products she’s able to order directly for them.

“Every year, people tell me they’re glad we’re back,” she said. “They’ll go to the bigger chains but come back here because they know we’ll have what they want — and if we don’t, I can usually get it.”

Over the years, Halloween Havoc has expanded its offerings beyond costumes to decorations, animatronics, and accessories. The shop also introduced a create-your-own costume section, giving shoppers the chance to piece together outfits with wigs, masks, makeup, and clothing to fit their personal style.

The 20th anniversary comes with some reflection for Autry, who said operating the store for two decades has been both rewarding and demanding.

“It means I’m getting old,” she joked. “But really, 20 years is a lot. Everything changes year to year, and you have to be on top of it. The support from Owensboro has been unbelievable.”

Through it all, Autry said she’s proud that Halloween Havoc has stayed true to its roots as a small, locally owned store.

“Doing Halloween for this long takes a lot,” she said. “But the community keeps showing up, and that makes it worth it.”
