Owensboro Health Regional Hospital was filled with bright colors and smiling faces on Sunday as families gathered for the annual Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Reunion.

This year’s theme, “Candy Adventures,” transformed the space with gingerbread houses, oversized lollipops, and gumdrops. The decorations provided a playful backdrop for photos, games, and sweet treats as NICU graduates and their families reconnected with the physicians, nurses, and care team who once cared for their smallest patients.

Since opening 15 years ago, the NICU has served nearly 4,500 families. Each reunion offers a chance to celebrate stories of resilience while also giving parents the opportunity to meet others who share similar experiences.

More than 800 people registered for this year’s event, including about 260 NICU graduates. Organizers said many additional families attended without registering.

“Our nurses do everything we can to make a NICU stay feel as normal and special as possible,” said Stephanie Tuell, NICU Nurse Manager. “Whether it’s celebrating a baby’s first bottle with a sweet picture, decorating for holidays, or creating handmade name signs for each little one, we want families to feel included in every milestone, even if they can’t be there in the moment.”

Tuell said the reunion is also meaningful for staff, who get to see children thriving years later.

“The NICU can be a stressful place for parents, so we look for ways to bring joy into the experience,” she said. “From dressing babies up for Halloween to Easter Bunny visits, these moments give families happy memories to hold onto alongside the hard ones.”

This was the second year the reunion returned following COVID-19. Moving forward, the annual celebration will take place each September.
