The Owensboro Family YMCA is teaming up with Kentucky Wesleyan College to relaunch a free tutoring program aimed at helping elementary and middle school students improve their academic performance.
The Y’s Learning Lab will begin its second year on October 6 and will be available Mondays through Thursdays from 4-6 p.m. The program is open to Owensboro and Daviess County students in kindergarten through 8th grade.
Thomas Bontrager, CEO of the YMCA, said the partnership is designed to meet families’ academic and financial needs.
“The Y strives to help youth thrive, and this continued partnership with Kentucky Wesleyan will provide a service to families that need it the most,” Bontrager said. “We’re excited to be able to offer it a second year and are grateful for the partnership with the college to continue to make an impact in the community.”
The Learning Lab uses Kentucky Wesleyan students to provide small-group tutoring in subjects identified by parents. Sessions will include hands-on strategies and activities in a welcoming setting.
Dr. Stephen Germic, KWC provost, said the collaboration benefits both the community and the college’s students.
“This is a great win-win partnership,” Germic said. “We have the opportunity to give back to the community and support the critical efforts of the Y’s Learning Lab, and our Wesleyan students have an opportunity to learn and grow as future teachers through direct experience. We want to express our enormous appreciation for everyone who makes this happen.”
The program is offered free of charge through the support of Kentucky Wesleyan College and donations from the Owensboro Rotary Club. Registration opens September 29 at owensboroymca.org.
