Donations are being collected for the annual Silver Bells project, which provides holiday gift bags to about 250 residents of long-term personal care homes in Daviess, Hancock, and Henderson counties.
The effort is coordinated through Green River Area Development District’s Ombudsman Program, which works with individuals who often have little or no discretionary income after covering their care costs. Organizers say the project helps ensure residents receive small comforts that facilities don’t typically provide.
Gift bags will include items such as socks, gloves, lip balm, hand lotion, puzzle books, canned soft drinks, and snack items. GRADD officials said the treats not only add seasonal cheer but also help residents preserve their limited resources for other essential needs not covered by their facilities.
Now in its twelfth year, Silver Bells is led by District Ombudsman Andrew Law, who advocates for residents in long-term care settings.
“The residents truly look forward to these gift bags each year,” Law said. “Silver Bells is our way of bringing a little joy and kindness into their holiday season.”
GRADD is accepting donations of goods, cash, or checks through Dec. 15. Donations may be dropped off at the GRADD office (300 Gradd Way) during regular business hours, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
