German American Bank has named Matt Merkel as its new Southwest Senior Regional President, a role in which he will help lead the bank’s strategy and community engagement across several local markets, including Owensboro and Henderson.
Merkel will work with the bank’s leadership team serving Evansville, Newburgh, Princeton, Henderson, Owensboro, Tell City, and Rockport. His responsibilities include overseeing regional strategy, supporting relationship-focused commercial banking, and guiding continued growth throughout the southwest region.
“Matt’s experience as a banking and community leader makes him a great fit for German American Bank’s unique style of community banking, which focuses on local decision making, value-added counsel, relationship building, and strong community involvement,” Chairman and CEO Neil Dauby said. “He joins an already strong and dedicated team of local financial professionals.”
Merkel brings more than 30 years of banking and leadership experience to the role, most recently serving as a market president at Old National Bank. His background includes commercial lending, community banking, and team development.
He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Western Kentucky University and has served on numerous civic and nonprofit boards, including the USI Foundation, Signature School Foundation, and the Memorial High School Finance Committee. He has also been involved in fundraising efforts for organizations such as United Way, the American Red Cross, and Memorial High School.
“My heart is firmly planted in community banking, and joining German American Bank truly feels like coming home to my community banking roots,” Merkel said. “Not only is the company financially strong and large enough to serve the most sophisticated clients, but its strong commitment to local values resonates throughout the bank. I look forward to contributing to the success and growth of our customers, employees, and our local communities.”
Merkel is a longtime resident of southwest Indiana and lives in Evansville with his wife, Julie.
