Owensboro High School’s Academic Team claimed the Overall District Governor’s Cup championship last week, with both the Quick Recall and Future Problem Solving teams advancing to regional competition.
Owensboro High School earned runner-up finishes in both Quick Recall and Future Problem Solving. The combined results, along with strong performances in written assessments and composition, secured the overall district title.
Several Owensboro High School students also delivered top individual finishes.
Adrion Perez placed first in Mathematics and added a third-place finish in Science. Sam Busse earned first place in Social Studies and finished fourth in Mathematics. Khoa Ta placed first in Arts and Humanities and second in Social Studies. Lucy Doyal placed fifth in Arts and Humanities.
Madelyn Haysley earned second place in Language Arts and fifth in Composition. Verlain Purdom claimed first place in Composition, while Zoey Minton placed fourth.
Head coach Adam Pryor said the team’s overall performance reflects contributions across multiple events.
“We ended up being district champions overall just from all the different points that we got from content assessment tests, quick recall, and future problem solving and composition,” Pryor said. “It all accumulated up to being district champions.”
The district includes Owensboro, Daviess County, Apollo, and Owensboro Catholic.
Owensboro High School is hosting the regional Governor’s Cup competition this week. Written composition and Future Problem Solving events are scheduled first, followed by content assessments and Quick Recall.
Teams from across the region are expected to compete.
“We’re still planning on making it back to state in quick recall and FPS, and we’ll still have quite a few make it in content assessment as well,” Pryor said.
Pryor credited students for the program’s sustained success.
“All the work that goes into studying and preparing for the tests and for quick recall is all on the kids,” Pryor said. “They get out of it what they put into it.”
