According to a Daviess County Sheriff’s Office media release, on Thursday, detectives from the Daviess County Sheriff’s Office, the Ohio County Sheriff’s Office and the Owensboro Police Department arrested Robert “Curtis” Lane of the 3200 block of Greenbriar Road, Utica, KY on multiple fraud charges resulting from investigations into criminal activity that had been reported to each agency.
In early May 2019, detectives at DCSO, OCSO and OPD started investigations into several cases of checks being stolen, altered and deposited at a local bank. Lane was developed as a suspect after a search warrant was obtained for this bank records. After his arrest, Lane confessed that he would steal mail from mailboxes in an effort to locate personal checks that people had placed in the mail to pay bills with and then alter the name on the check to his name and change the amounts so that he could deposit them into his account and then withdraw the money later.
Lane was charged with following:
5 counts of criminal possession of a forged instrument in the second degree
4 counts of theft of mail matter
More charges are pending and the investigation is ongoing at this time. People are urged to keep an eye on their account activity to monitor for fraud. The Sheriff’s Office said if able, people should not place money, checks or personal information in mailboxes until close to pick up time. If possible, people are encouraged to drop these types of mail off at a USPS facility or blue mailbox.
