Senator Matt Castlen (R-Owensboro) has been appointed to serve as the Senate Co-Chair of the Classification of Workers in Construction Industry Task Force.

The duties of the task force shall include but are not limited to, the following:

  • Studying the cooperation and sharing of information between relevant state and federal agencies as it relates to the classification of workers in the construction industry.
  • Analyzing the existing methods of enforcement action against employers that incorrectly classify employees.
  • Establishing best practices to educate employers, employees, and the general public, and developing a comprehensive plan with measurable goals to prevent the incorrect classification of employees in the Commonwealth.

“The construction industry is the foundation of Kentucky’s economy. The employees make that foundation strong,” Castlen said in a release. “As we look to rebuild our economy, we must continue to strengthen the construction industry and protect its employees. The findings of this group will be essential in doing so. I look forward to getting started and am humbled by the opportunity to serve as co-chair.”

The task force will meet at least once per month during the 2020 Interim of the General Assembly.

By Dec. 1, the task force will submit findings, recommendations, and any proposed legislation to the Legislative Research Commission for a referral to the appropriate committee or committees.
