Owensboro Catholic has its eyes set on a 2nd District Championship when they take on Hancock County for the second time this season on Friday.
The Aces are coming off a dominant win over Butler County in which senior quarterback Lincoln Clancy put on a clinic offensively.
Clancy threw for 320 yards and six touchdowns on 20-26 passing, with senior Braden Mundy and sophomore William Carrico being his primary targets.
Carrico led the way with 143 yards and three touchdowns on eight receptions, while Munday had 119 yards and a touchdown on six receptions. Sophomore Hunter Monroe also had a strong game in the backfield, rushing for 193 yards on 20 carries.
The Aces kept up their string of strong defensive performances as well, making it six straight games in which they’ve held opposing offenses to 16 points. Butler County is the only team to have scored in double figures in their matchups with Owensboro Catholic during that stretch.
The Aces will be tasked with facing a Hancock County team that is coming off a 14-6 win over Todd County Central and will be looking for revenge.
When the Hornets took on Owensboro Catholic in the regular season they lost 47-0, making the Aces the only team to hold Hancock County to less than 14 points all season long.
“Last game against Hancock County, we played well and executed our gameplans very well,” Head Coach Jason Morris said. “We were very physical, and we tackled well.”
With this matchup in the back of their mind and plenty of more games having been played, Morris said that they’ve had plenty more to prepare with this time around and it has helped push them in practice.
“This time, we have more film to review and we have our game from last time to review,” Morris said. “Also, this time of year we are focused on getting to Friday night healthy, so our practices get even more up-tempo.”
Morris said that in practice they’ve focused on limiting mistakes on both sides of the ball in practice in order to ensure a path to victory on Friday.
“We have focused on not forcing the issue and ball security,” Morris said. “We have also continued to focus on alignment, assignment, effort, and tackling on defense.”
Owensboro Catholic will hope to hoist the 2nd District Championship trophy after they take on Hancock County at 7 p.m. on Friday.
