Update: Two juveniles were injured and one was in critical condition after an ATV was struck by a passenger car on KY 81, according to the Daviess County Sheriff’s Office.
According to a release, the accident occurred at approximately 8:30 p.m. in the 7300 block of KY 81 when a passenger car traveling northbound struck an ATV also traveling northbound.
“Preliminary investigation indicates that a four-wheeler occupied by two juveniles ages 13 (driver) and 12 (passenger) were traveling northbound on Highway 81 in an unlighted portion of the highway when a 2019 Honda passenger car that was also traveling northbound came upon them,” a release from DCSO says. “Due to the time of day and hours of darkness and with this being a portion of the roadway subject to higher speed limits, the driver of the passenger car did not initially see the four-wheeler. When the driver did see the four-wheeler, they attempted to avoid a collision by braking suddenly but was unable to completely stop or slow down enough and ultimately struck the four-wheeler causing injuries to the occupants.”
The two juveniles on the ATV were both transported to Owensboro Health Regional Hospital via AMR ground ambulance, according to DCSO. The 13-year-old was in stable condition and kept at OHRH while the 12-year-old was in critical condition and transported to a Louisville-area hospital via AirEvac.
DCSO was assisted by Daviess County and Moseleyville fire departments.
The roadway was closed for about 3 hours.
