As World Elder Abuse Awareness Day approaches on June 15, the Green River Area Development District (GRADD) is highlighting the ongoing work of its Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program, which advocates for residents in nursing homes and long-term care facilities across the region.
“The Ombudsman Program advocates for the highest quality of care in long-term care facilities while empowering residents and protecting their rights,” said District Ombudsman Andrew Law. “The GRADD Ombudsman Program is always looking for volunteers to advocate for long-term care residents — if interested, please contact me.”
Ombudsman staff and volunteers regularly visit facilities in GRADD’s seven-county service area, working with residents and families to resolve concerns and ensure that care meets state standards and individual needs. The program also offers community education on recognizing, reporting, and preventing elder abuse.
Law said that at its core, the program works to protect dignity, ensure rights, and give residents a voice. Its efforts include investigating complaints, supporting resident and family councils, and promoting civic engagement through its Advisory Council and volunteer network.
As an example of their engagement, District Ombudsman staff and Advisory Council members will join fellow advocates in Frankfort on June 12 to raise awareness and stand against adult maltreatment.
To report suspected elder abuse, call the Elder Abuse Hotline at 800-928-9094. To learn more about the local program, contact Law at 270-852-1341 or [email protected].
