Traffic on the Owensboro Bridge will be reduced to one lane starting today as crews begin preparation work for a major repair project later this summer. Single-lane traffic is expected to last through Thursday.
Flaggers will direct alternating traffic during this phase of work, according to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.
The lane restrictions come ahead of a full bridge closure scheduled to begin after the July 4 holiday weekend. The bridge is expected to be closed for up to 90 days as part of a project to replace the aging bridge deck, make concrete repairs, and repair bridge joints.
While the entire project is slated to last through November, KYTC officials said the bridge closure will be limited to 90 days or less, with the goal of reopening it by early October.
During the closure, crews will fully replace a 750-foot-long span of concrete-filled bridge decking and make repairs to a second span of the same length. Because the decking spans the full width of the bridge, closing only one lane at a time is not possible during that phase of the project.
Officials said the temporary closure will also allow long-term maintenance work to extend the bridge’s lifespan.
