Habitat for Humanity Owensboro-Daviess County has named Amanda Green as its new executive director. The announcement was made Sunday afternoon during a three-home dedication ceremony at the newly developed Cargill Corner.
Green recently returned to her hometown of Owensboro after nearly 30 years away. Most recently, she served as executive director of It Takes a Village (ITV), an Evansville-based nonprofit that recently took over operations of the Daviess County Animal Shelter. She also previosuly held leadership positions at multiple nonprofits.
“This is such an exciting step for me,” Green said. “I’m so excited to be back and have a small part to be able to grow the community and families that live here.”
Green said personal circumstances led her to bring her children back to Owensboro, and the Habitat opening felt like a natural fit.
“We wanted a fresh start, and I loved it so much when I lived here,” she said. “Fresh starts for families; that’s kind of why we are here too.”
She said her first priorities include getting reacquainted with the community and building on the affiliate’s existing partnerships.
“It’s a completely different town than it was 30 years ago,” Green said. “There’s a lot of very exciting things that Habitat has on the back end — partnerships I’m still learning — but I’m looking forward to expanding on what’s already been done, both in the community and in new ones we plan to build over the next several months.”
Habitat Board Chair Dr. David Danhauer introduced Green on Sunday and praised her background and energy.
“She has a heart of gold and a smile and personality that outshines all of us,” Danhauer said. “She is going to be a tremendous gift for us here in Habitat, and we look forward to Habitat 3.0 with you.”
Green replaces Jeremy Stephens, who served as executive director for the past four years. Danhauer thanked Stephens for his leadership and credited him with elevating the local organization’s impact.
“Virginia brought us Habitat 1.0. Jeremy, you brought us Habitat 2.0,” Danhauer said. “We could not be here today without the gift you have been for us.”
Green told attendees she was eager to help continue the mission of building homes, communities, and hope.
“What an amazing way to receive keys — not just getting them from the board, but from the community that I am so excited to be a part of,” Green said. “I’m so thrilled to be part of Habitat for Humanity here and I’m looking forward to all the amazing things that we’re going to do in the future.”
