The Old Owensboro Neighborhood Alliance is officially back in action for the first time since 2022, with its first meeting scheduled for this Thursday. The Alliance, which serves one of the most historically active and diverse areas of the city, is seeking new members — both residents and business owners — to get involved and help shape the neighborhood’s future.

The meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. on July 10 at Third Baptist Church, located at 527 Allen Street. Meetings will continue on the second Thursday of each month through November.

“If you live or work within the boundaries of the Ohio River to Parrish Avenue, and from Frederica Street to the eastern city limits, we’d love for you to join us,” said Adrienne Carrico, executive assistant to the mayor. “This is a great opportunity to get involved and make a difference.”

Old Owensboro was one of the original four alliances created when the city launched the neighborhood alliance program in 1999. Carrico said the group was a key player in downtown revitalization efforts for more than two decades, including helping form the Owensboro Historic Preservation Board and pushing for the passage of the public nuisance ordinance in 2001.

“They were instrumental in identifying, protecting, and preserving some of our most historic properties,” Carrico said. “They weren’t just about beautification — they helped drive real policy changes.”

The group also led or contributed to several well-known community initiatives, including the creation of Old Germantown Park in 2008 and restoration efforts for the iconic Kentucky Mirror Mosaic downtown. They hosted festivals like Oktoberfest and an arts festival in Germantown Park, bringing neighbors together year after year.

But by 2022, the Alliance had dwindled to just three members. With no one able to step into the chairperson role, the group went dormant — until now.

With five new board members already in place and up to four more positions open, the group is ready to relaunch.

Carrico said both residents and business owners are encouraged to attend and consider joining, regardless of whether they want to be voting members or just participate in discussions and community events.

“Businesses are stakeholders in these neighborhoods, too,” Carrico said. “We’ve had more local business owners getting involved recently, and we welcome that. Their voices matter.”

Meeting dates are subject to change and will be announced in advance.
