DCSO: Bicyclist hit by car, flown to hospital

A bicyclist was hit by a car and flown to the hospital with critical injuries early Thursday morning, according to the Daviess County Sheriff’s Office. The cyclist has since been identified as a missing person out of Hopkins County.

A release from DCSO says that at approximately 5:15 a.m., Owensboro-Daviess County Central Dispatch received a call of a single-vehicle accident with injuries in the 6700 block of U.S. 60 West near the intersection of Oakford Road. 

The driver of the car stated that he was westbound on U.S. 60 when he struck a subject riding a bicycle also traveling in the westbound lane, according to DCSO. Authorities said the bicyclist was wearing dark clothing at the time of the collision, and the bicycle did not have lights or reflectors on it.

The subject on the bicycle was flown by Air Evac Medical Ambulance to an Evansville hospital with critical injuries, authorities said. The driver of the vehicle was not injured. 

Criminal charges are not anticipated in this case, according to DCSO.

DCSO 3rd Platoon patrol deputies, Daviess County and Stanley fire departments, and AMR Ambulance all responded to work the accident. The roadway was closed for approximately 2 hours. DCSO Accident Reconstruction Unit responded to further the investigation due to the severity of the injuries.
