A driver was ejected from their vehicle and critically injured Thursday evening in a single-car crash near the intersection of Lonesome Pine and Windy Hollow roads, according to the Daviess County Sheriff’s Office.

Emergency crews responded to the scene around 7:15 p.m. and found a severely damaged car about 20 feet off the roadway, resting against a tree, according to a release from DCSO. The driver, who was the sole occupant, had been ejected from the vehicle and was transported by ground to Owensboro Health Regional Hospital with life-threatening injuries, officials said.

According to DCSO, the car had been traveling eastbound on Lonesome Pine Road when it left the roadway, crashed through a guardrail, crossed a ditch, and struck multiple trees. Officials believe alcohol, speed, and failure to use a seatbelt contributed to the severity of the crash.

The DCSO Accident Reconstruction Unit was called to the scene due to the extent of the injuries. Lonesome Pine, Windy Hollow, and a portion of KY 554 were closed for approximately 2 hours during the investigation.

Along with DCSO, the response included Owensboro-Daviess County Central Dispatch, Daviess County Fire Department, Moseleyville Fire Department, and AMR Ambulance Service. An AirEvac helicopter was initially requested but was canceled once rescue crews decided to transport the patient by ground.
