Kicking off their season Saturday, Daviess County finished second at the Warren East Twilight Invite, with seven of their athletes finishing in the top 15. Makenzie Ross ran a 20:24.99 and finished fifth, while Haley Wolfe was right behind her, running a 20:32.37 and finishing sixth. Rylee Emmick (9th, 21:29.40) Kloee Gaynor (10th, 21:30.96) Bentlei Stallings (12th, 21:49.15), Anna King (14th, 22:16.81) and Mallory Raines (15th, 22:24.86) rounded out the team’s times.
“They did an outstanding job working together as a team”, Daviess County head coach Lew Orlow said. “The seniors really helped their young teammates during warmups and the race. We had the most medalists out of all the schools, with seven. It was a great team effort.”
E-Gals start the seaon strong
Competing in the Fenton Dawson Invitational on Saturday, the Apollo E-Gals finished fourth (109), with senior Ava Falloway finishing eighth overall (23.09.7).
“Overall, I was pleased with our performance today,” Apollo Head Coach Charlie Shoulta said. “Our main goal was simply to shake off the rust and get a race under our belt. For a couple of our runners, this was their first-ever 5K, so I really wanted to see how they looked and how they handled that experience.”
Behind Falloway was freshman Avery Boarman (13th, 23.35.1), senior Jada Pollard (31st, 25.19.4), senior Abbie Carmon (42nd, 27.32.3), senior Kirii Mattingly (47th, 28.29.5), and sophomore Addison Ewing (83rd, 39.19.9).
“Now that we’ve got one race behind us and I’ve seen how the girls competed, I’m excited about a few small adjustments we can make to our race strategy moving forward,” Shoulta said. “I was especially impressed with Senior Ava Falloway and Freshman Avery Boarman. What stood out to me was how they steadily moved up throughout the race and stayed strong over the final mile. Ava finished about 20 seconds ahead of Avery, but for most of the race, the gap was closer to 10 seconds. Our next step is to develop a plan for them to work together through the first half to two-thirds of the race. If they can do that, I think we’ll see some really good things happen.”
