A 28-year-old inmate died Wednesday morning at the Daviess County Detention Center, according to officials, and an investigation is underway.

According to a release from the Daviess County Jailer, at approximately 5 a.m., deputy jailers responded to a medical emergency in a housing unit involving inmate Dalton Gordon, who had been booked into the facility on August 19. Staff found Gordon unresponsive and began lifesaving efforts while calling for on-site medical personnel and an American Medical Response ambulance, according to the release.

Officials said Gordon was housed alone at the time of the incident. Emergency crews arrived at 5:09 a.m. but were unable to revive him, according to the release.

Officials said there were no apparent signs of suicide or foul play, and an autopsy has been scheduled for August 21.

The Daviess County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the initial investigation. The Kentucky State Police and Daviess County Coroner’s Office are leading the death investigation.

The detention center is also conducting an administrative review, the release says.

According to Gordon’s arrest citation, officers were called to a business on West Parrish Avenue at approximately 7:34 a.m. on August 19 after reports of a former employee intoxicated in the break room, where police said they found Gordon lying on the floor. The citation says officers observed Gordon “to be very sweaty, fidget a lot, and have large pupils.” The document says Gordon advised officers that he smoked meth on Monday morning and took 20mg of Adderall on Tuesday.

Records show that Gordon was booked into the Daviess County Detention Center at 8:27 a.m. on August 19 on the charge of public intoxication involving controlled substances.
