It was a productive Saturday for the local teams as Owensboro Catholic won the Western Kentucky Smackdown Tournament, and Trinity (Whitesville) finished 2-2 in the KCAC Tournament. In other action, Apollo swept Muhlenberg County in their doubleheader, and Daviess County finished 3-0.

Apollo 2-0 vs. Muhlenberg County

In a doubleheader against Muhlenberg County, the E-Gals went 2-0, winning the first game 2-1 (25-12, 14-25, 25-16) and the second 2-0 (25-18, 25-13). Avery Gray finished with 19 kills, 11 digs, six service aces, and one block, while Jessie Pate recorded 26 digs and six service aces. Keelan Wettstain had a team-high 10 service aces and added 14 digs, 10 kills, and one block. Jessica Lee finished with 16 assists, three digs, three kills, and three blocks, while Maddi Roberts recorded 14 assists and 10 digs.

“Our girls played hard today and worked through moments of adversity,” Apollo Head Coach Mary Howard said. “Our serving intensity picked up at the end when we needed to close out the wins.”

Daviess County 3-0 on the day

Jenna Lawson recorded 15 assists, and Haylee Clark led the team in kills with nine to help the Lady Panthers beat Glasgow 2-1 (25-15, 23-25, 15-6). Against Campbellsville, the Lady Panthers won 2-0 (25-22, 25-13) with Reese Whiteside posting eight kills and one block. Lexi Jones and Lawson led the team in digs and assists with 12 and 11, respectively. In their 2-0 (25-16, 25-12) win over Metcalfe, Lawson had 11 assists and four digs, while Clark recorded eight kills, two blocks and one dig.

Lady Aces win Western Kentucky Smackdown Tournament

Owensboro Catholic finished a perfect 6-0 en route to winning the Western Kentucky Smackdown Tournament. They beat Caldwell County 2-0 (25-19, 25-15), Crittenden County (25-21, 25-15), Christian County (25-6, 25-15), Hopkinsville County (25-9, 25-10), University Heights 2-0 (25-14, 25-11), before sweeping Kirkwood 2-0 (25-16, 25-17) in the Championship.

Ava Martin led the way with 37 kills, 25 digs, four service aces, and two blocks, while Mayme Powell had 86 assists, 14 digs, 11 service aces, seven kills, and four blocks. Molly Arnold led the team in digs with 27 and added five assists, and three service aces, while Emma Castlen finished with 20 kills, 17 blocks, eight service aces, and four digs.

Trinity (Whitesville) finishes KCAC Tournament 2-2

The Lady Raiders finished 2-2 in the KCAC Tournament, beating Cornerstone Christian 2-1 (23-25, 25-23, 15-3) and Frankfort Christian 2-0 (25-21, 25-7) and losing to Portland Christan 2-0 (22-25, 13-25) and Heritage Christian 2-1 (25-18, 17-25, 6-15). Emmy Edge finished the day with 50 assists, 19 digs, and 11 service aces, while Gracie Mills had 15 kills. Laney Mills had 42 digs and Lilly Goetz posted seven kills. Annie Coomes recorded 11 kills and four blocks, Ava Coomes had 11 kills and 10 blocks, and Ella Morris finished with 18 digs, nine kills, and eight service aces.

“We played well at times, but we are still looking for consistency across the board,” Trinity (Whitesville) Head Coach Adam Huff said. “We do several things really well and then have some stretches of unforced errors that we have to do better to win close matches. We know our team is a work in progress and we did improve throughout the day, so that’s what we need right now, but consistency is what will make us be able to get to the next level.”
