In front of a packed Daviess County media center crowd that included his family, friends, and teammates, the Panther’s Jonathan Moss made his college announcement, committing to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Moss chose Chattanooga over Ball State, Eastern Kentucky, and Evansville, acknowledging that he could see himself fitting in well.
“They had a guard that played just like me, and he went on to bigger places,” Moss said. “They told me they liked the way I pass, shoot, and handle the ball. My IQ in general.”
Moss set an early fall deadline for himself to make his decision so he can focus on his senior season without any distractions.
“My mindset is focused on this season, but I am also really trying to prepare for college,” Moss said.
When speaking to the players at Chattanooga, Moss acknowledged that the atmosphere felt the same as when he was with his Daviess County teammates, stating they all connected well.
The senior point guard is fresh off averaging 19.5 points and 3.5 rebounds and helping the Panthers win the 3rd Region Championship and reach the State Tournament. After three dominant seasons at Daviess County, Moss is closing in on the school’s all-time points and assists records and has the chance to leave as a 2,000-point scorer.
Moss played for the varsity team as an eighth grader, before joining Owensboro High School his freshman year. After winning the 3rd Region Championship with the Red Devils, Moss returned to Daviess County in his sophomore year, averaging 17.1 points per game.
Daviess County Head Coach Neil Hayden lauded Moss during the ceremony, calling him the best point guard and overall player in the state of Kentucky.
“As far as a player, Moss is a dream to coach,” Hayden said. “I have been around Jonathan as a high school coach since his eighth-grade year, and he is a player who makes others around him better. He makes plays and comes in every day to practice and works tirelessly. He has put in a tremendous amount of time on his own early in the mornings and late at night. He is a special kid for all of those reasons, and this is something he has earned.”
