Week four features Apollo traveling to Hancock County, while Owensboro hosts Owensboro Catholic. In other action, Daviess County travels to Christian County, and McLean County hosts Hart County.
Apollo (0-3) (Class 5A, District 1) @Hancock County (3-0) (Class 2A, District 2)
The Eagles are 0-3 after dropping a close game to Owensboro Catholic. With starting QB Max Johnson sidelined, JT Edge stepped up in his stead, throwing three touchdown passes, while the defense won the turnover battle. Tonight, they travel to Hancock County, which has started the season 3-0. Last week, they shutout Ohio County 45-0, behind a run game that rushed for 333 yards and five touchdowns. The Eagles will have their hands full attempting to limit a Hornets offense that has outscored opponents 121-40 through the first three weeks.
Owensboro Catholic (3-0) (Class 2A, District 2) @ Owensboro (1-2) (Class 5A, District 1)
The Aces are 3-0 after holding off Apollo last week, 28-21, behind a run game that rushed for 301 yards and three touchdowns. Traveling to Owensboro, Head Coach Jason Morris said to disregard both records and that he expects the Red Devils’ best.
“Our defense will need to do the best they can to keep the ball in front of us,” Morris said. “With that kind of speed, we will need to be where we’re supposed to be, be on time, and we will need to tackle well in space.”
To take on the Aces vaunted defense, Owensboro Head Coach Da’Marcus Ganaway wants to see his offense continue to produce and continue their consistency.
“Their defense plays relentless, fast, and are always where they are supposed to be,” Ganaway said. “They tackle well in the open field and are coached up very well.”
Ganaway acknowledged that his team will need to be aware of Miles Edge at all times on both sides of the ball. It will be a battle of top running backs, as on the opposite side is the Red Devils Evan Hampton.
“It’s about time for Evan to really get going, ” Ganaway said. “He started to get going in the Daviess County game and that was the spark that we needed to get our offense rolling.”
Morris stated that he wants his offense to continue to improve their consitency.
“We continue to say the same thing every week,” Morris said. “We need to eliminate turnovers and any penalties that are killing drives.”
Daviess County (1-2) (Class 6A, District 2) @ Christian County (0-3) (Class 6A, District 1)
Quick notes: After a promising opening drive, the Panthers’ offense struggled at times last week in their loss to Owensboro Catholic. This week, they travel to Christian County, which is still looking for its first win.
Head Coach Quadarius Wallace said: So far, we have had a tremendous week of practice. Even though both teams that we played the last two weeks were very talented teams, we took the mindset that we needed to focus on ourselves. We want to get back to the way that we play football.
Christian County has some very talented athletes. Zyon Wharton is a tall playmaker. Sometimes they put him in at wildcat QB and he is a good player, so we will need to know where he is at all times.
I like the matchup up front on both ends. I think it’s an opportunity for our offensive line to establish some dominance. I think that’s going to be a fun matchup.
In order for us to have a good week, our offensive line needs to play well, and our defensive line needs to have a big week. For us, it is all about the guys up front. They make us go and make things happen for us. When they are clicking, we’re clicking.
McLean County (2-1) (Class 2A, District 2) Vs. Hart County (2-1) (Class 3A, District 2)
Quick Notes: The Cougars improved to 2-1 on the season after cruising past Grayson County 24-7, behind a strong defensive performance and Aden Bolden’s four rushing touchdowns. Tonight they host Hart County.
Head Coach Zach Wagner said: Hart is a big, and physical downhill running team. We will need to match their physicality.
Both teams are ball-control running teams, and Hart has a big and physical offensive line. We will be outweighed by an average of 150 pounds, and their RB Jake Crump returns is a big, strong back who is their workhorse.
