Owensboro Health Regional Hospital has again earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Energy Star certification. This marks the sixth consecutive year receiving the recognition, with officials saying it demonstrates the hospital’s commitment to sustainability and responsible energy use.
According to a release from OHRH, Energy Star-certified buildings and plants perform in the top 25 percent of similar facilities nationwide. OHRH achieved a score of 77, meaning its Energy Use Index (EUI) is better than 77% of hospitals in the country.
“We’re proud to once again be recognized for our energy efficiency,” said Mark Marsh, Owensboro Health President and CEO. “This award reflects the dedication of our team to operate responsibly, reduce our environmental impact and keep resources focused on what matters most — our patients and community.”
Officials said that since partnering with Trane Energy Specialists in 2014, Owensboro Health has reduced its overall energy consumption by more than 26 percent, saving over $5 million in utility costs. These savings are reinvested in patient care, technology and community programs.
Barry Mullen, Facilities Supervisor, said the recognition represents both progress and teamwork.
“We’ve made smart, lasting changes — from LED lighting and motion sensors to HVAC setback systems and real-time monitoring,” he said. “Every team member plays a role in keeping Owensboro Health efficient and sustainable.”
The Pleasant Valley Medical Office Building, connected to Owensboro Health Regional Hospital, has also achieved Energy Star certification for three consecutive years. Other Owensboro Health facilities, including the Henderson Healthplex, are pursuing similar goals with the addition of solar energy systems.
Former Executive Director of Facilities Joe Taylor, who continues to consult with Owensboro Health, said maintaining high efficiency requires constant attention.
“Earning Energy Star year after year isn’t automatic — it takes daily effort and commitment,” he said. “We’re proud that this work not only saves money but also protects our environment for future generations.”
