As the federal government shutdown continues, Owensboro’s iconic Wonder Whip is stepping up to help local families who may be affected by the temporary suspension of SNAP benefits.

Starting Saturday, and continuing until benefits are restored, Wonder Whip will offer free Grilled Cheese Kid’s Meals at both of its Owensboro locations — the longtime restaurant at 2434 E. 4th St. and the new location at 2600 Frederica St.

The offer includes a grilled cheese sandwich, kid’s French fry, and kid’s drink. Meals will be available for walk-up guests only — not through the drive-thru — and children must be present to receive one meal per visit.

“A lot of families in our community are facing uncertain times. Hopefully this helps put some minds at ease, owner Seth Woodward said. “The thought of a child going to bed hungry in our own community because of the government shutdown is unimaginable.”

The restaurant, known as the “Home of the Wonderburger,” has served Owensboro for more than eight decades and expressed gratitude for the community’s ongoing support.

“We’ve been blessed so many times over the years and this is simply a chance to pay it forward,” Woodward said.
