Tied 14-14 at halftime, McLean County was unable to keep up with Crittenden County, falling 28-20 in the first round of the 2A playoffs.
Starting with the ball, the Cougars turned it over on downs around midfield, but a few plays later, Riley Walker came down with an interception. Marching down the field, Hunter Stratton ran it in from a few yards out and scored the ensuing two-point attempt.
On the Rockets’ next possession, the Cougars forced and recovered a fumble around midfield, setting up Trokoby Gill for a 18-yard touchdown run and a 14-0 lead.
From there, Crittenden County went on a 28-0 run, taking a 28-14 lead late in the fourth quarter. The Cougars cut the lead to eight on a Walker 12-yard touchdown run, but they were unable to complete the comeback.
“I am proud of our guys for fighting through all the adversity we faced from injuries,” McLean County Head Coach Zach Wagner said. I thought we had our chances to win the game, but failed to convert inside the red zone once. We had some miscues in the secondary that cost us.”
