Drivers along KY 54 should expect delays on Sunday as crews shift all traffic onto the newly built south side of the roadway, marking the end of Phase One and the start of Phase Two in the ongoing widening project.
Between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., contractors for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet will block the left lanes and turning lanes from Heartland Crossing Boulevard (just west of U.S. 60) to Bold Forbes Way. Crews will remove existing pavement markings, install new striping, and adjust traffic signals to support the new configuration.
KYTC officials said that once the work is complete, all four lanes of KY 54 will move onto the south side of the highway. Motorists will continue using the same setup that has been in place since construction began: four 10-foot travel lanes and a shared center turn lane.
The shift clears the way for Phase Two, which focuses on building the new westbound lane on the north side of the corridor. Weather permitting, crews will immediately begin earthwork and install stormwater drainage systems.
According to a release, KY 54 carries an estimated 32,000 vehicles per day between Heartland Crossing and Bold Forbes. The $23.3 million project will widen the existing four-lane highway to six lanes to accommodate continued commercial and residential growth.
A third and final phase of construction will include building a new concrete median and laying new asphalt throughout the project area.
